A thrilling prequel to John Carpenters cult classic the Thing, that is full of scares and exciting plot twists.

In 1982, paleontologist Kate Lloyd
(Winstead) is recruited by scientists Dr. Sander Halversen (Thomsen) and his assistant Adam Finch (Olsen) to join a Norwegian scientific team that has discovered a crashed extraterrestrial spaceship buried beneath the ice of Antarctica. After some investigation, they discover the frozen corpse of a creature that seems to have died in the crash 100,000 years ago. They take the block of ice to do tests on, but that night as they celebrate their find, Co-Pilot Derek (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) watches on as the creature escapes from the ice. Now with the creature on the loose, it is a fight for the group to stay alive and destroy the creature. Oh, and one more thing, the creature absorbs and takes the form of any of his victims, so you never know who to trust.

The cast are superb and the stand out for me is the 00's scream queen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Taking the reigns from the likes of Jamie lee Curtis and Neve Campbell, she truly is terrific and brings so much passion to the horror genre. I have seen her in her roles in 'Final Destination 3', 'Black Xmas' and 'Deathproof', but this is by far her most mature and thrilling performance. She is surrounded by a terrific supporting cast, but as the only female she really stands out, and for all the good reasons.
The direction is superb, and although not as creepy or effective as Carpenter's it certainly works well. It helps clear up any mysteries from the original, as well as adding a whole host of new ones. The acting is excellent, and added with a terrific score from Marco Beltrami and  suspense filled scenes it really is a treat. It is out early December and if you're a fan of the original it is certainly a must see, and if not...watch it anyway, it's pretty darn good.
