Born in Dublin, the star is best recognised for his starring role in the 1998 comedy film Waking Ned, for which he actually recieved a Screen Actors' Guild nomination.

More recently, Kelly is better known for playing Grandpa Joe in the 2005 Tim Burton film, Charlie and the Chocloate Factory, one of his last screen appearances.

His friend and former Ballykissangel co-star Niall Toibin released a statement saying:
"He was a hilarious man. He had an outlook on life that was slightly skewed and made you laugh all the time."

He passed away in hospital after a short illness, and is survived by his long-time wife Laurie Morton.

Such a sad loss, RIP Mr David Kelly.
